A Quebec slaughter plant has been fined $62,000 after pleading guilty to a series of charges, including inhumane treatment of animals and impeding the work of inspectors.
Atrahan Transformation Inc. pleaded guilty to 27 charges, including “failure to comply with the requirements of humane treatment and slaughter, improper operation of a bolt pistol, inadequate monitoring of carcasses, and impeding the work of inspectors,” according to a Canadian Food Inspection Agency news release.
The charges were for events occurring between October 2007 and May 2008 at the Yamachiche plant near Trois Rivieres.
The company has been selected as one of the best managed in Canada.
On its website, it highlights its commitment to the hazardous analysis critical control points system and says that it works closely with producers to ensure it has products that can be traced back to their source.
