Agribition sheep prices dip

Prices at the two sheep sales held in conjunction with Canadian Western Agribition were down slightly this year.

Sixty-four sheep sold in the Saskatchewan Sheep Breeders Association sale, for an average $339.92, compared to 98 lots selling last year for an average $370.

The grand champion market lamb was the high seller. Consigned by Mackid’s Sheep of Regina, it sold for $800 to Supreme Basics Office Equipment.

In the Katahdin sale, 19 lots sold for $7,730 or an average $406.84.

The top seller was a ram, JJCM 5T Spike, consigned by Mish Katahdins at Glenavon, Sask., and purchased by Calvin Rydzik, also of Glenavon, for $2,250.

Lower feedgrain prices set to boost feeder cattle market

For the week ending July 25, western Canadian feeder cattle markets were unchanged from the previous week, although volumes were limited.

Katahdin prices at the 2007 sale averaged $685 but were pushed higher by a $3,700 ram.

In the Katahdin show, Triple C Ranch of Arborfield, Sask., exhibited both the grand, CCC 22T, and reserve, CCC 146S, champion ewes. Mish Katahdins showed the grand champion ram, JJCM 155T Crash, and B & R Farms at Raymore, Sask., had the reserve, BRT 562T.

The MacDougall family of Regina did well in the show through their Kimdain Sheep, Mackid’s Sheep and individual entries.

Kimdain Sheep showed the grand champion ewe, Cornerstone Tania 4882T, and ram, Kimdain Lad 1T, in the any other breed class.

Courtney MacDougall showed the reserve in both classes, Mackid’s Lass 4T and Mackid’s Micky 6U.

In the Suffolk competition, Kimdain Lass 4U won grand champion ewe, while Kimdain Lass 1U was the reserve. The grand champion ram was Kimdain Lad 23U. Ward Mortenson of Saltcoats, Sask., showed the reserve, Ward 26U.

Prairie Rose Dorsets of Drake, Sask., cleaned up in the Dorset show, winning grand champion ewe with Prairie Rose 4U, reserve grand champion ewe with Bare Hills 4T and grand champion ram, Sawyer C 58T.

The reserve ram was Bare Hills 167T, exhibited by Bare Hills Dorsets at Delisle, Sask.

Alberta exhibitors First Knight Hampshires, of Halkirk, took three prizes in the Hampshire show: reserve grand champion ewe, First Knight 66T; grand champion ram, First Knight 64T; and reserve ram, First Knight 65 T.

Clinton Wiens of Drake, Sask., showed the grand champion Hampshire ewe, Wiens C 44R.

Agribition was held Nov. 24-29.
