One Saskatchewan school has been given a reprieve after an initial round of meetings in the Prairie South School Division, but six others are still under review.

Eyebrow School was taken off the division’s list of schools under review at a Feb. 1 board meeting. At the same meeting the board approved motions to consider discontinuing grades or closing schools in Chaplin, Willow Bunch, Briercrest, Crane Valley, Limerick and Ecole Ross in Moose Jaw.

Residents of these communities will be able to meet with the board to discuss concerns at public meetings scheduled for each school between Feb. 12 and 21. A final decision won’t be made until May.

Kelly Ruzicka, reeve of the Rural Municipality of Stonehenge in Limerick, said the board faced fierce opposition to closing the school at an earlier meeting in that community. He said closures won’t save money and rural residents are already subsidizing urban schools.
