Plans to stage Paper Wheat in Regina this summer as part of Saskatchewan centennial celebrations have been shelved.
Janet Amos, who was to produce the play that portrays the reasons that farmers started the wheat pools, said the organizers were unable to raise enough money to mount the production.
Instead, the group will offer a smaller theatre presentation based on Saskatchewan songs and writing, she said.
She said organizers had hoped to obtain a centennial grant to help with expenses but could not do so unless they agreed not to charge admission to the play. Those conditions made the project unworkable.
Amos noted that Paper Wheat will be on stage this year in Prince Albert so people will still be able to see Saskatchewan history in that format.
