Parents from Glenavon, Sask., have won a two-year-long battle. The Prairie Valley School Division board has agreed to provide a bus for their children to attend school in Wolseley.
The parents had been paying for busing, on their own and through fundraising, since the division closed their school in 2007 and announced that the students would go to Montmartre.
Some families wanted their children to go to Wolseley instead. The board said they could but the division would not pay for the transportation.
Montmartre is about 23 kilometres from Glenavon, while Wolseley is about 32 km away. About 40 students chose Wolseley and the annual cost of that bus was about $35,000.

Earlier in 2009, the parents took the matter to court. A judicial review upheld the board’s right to make the decision. But at a December meeting, the board had a change of heart. Elections last fall resulted in three new faces at the table, and the new chair, Ed Geall, said the board wanted to try to heal the ill will.
A Prairie Valley School Division bus will start transporting the children from Glenavon to Wolseley at the end of January, as long as the families continue to send them there.
