The governments of British Columbia and Yukon are partnering for food strategies in the North.
“In January, the ministers of agriculture of B.C. and the Yukon signed a memorandum of understanding. It essentially builds on the relationship between the two jurisdictions and acknowledges some key areas to work on around food security, around agriculture production and growing market opportunities for northern communities,” said Matt Ball, director of agriculture with the Yukon government.
It is expected the two governments will partner with the agriculture sector, as well as academic and community leaders, to help develop and share expertise about agriculture in the north.

Farm equipment dealership chain expands
This summer, AgWest announced it was building two new dealership buildings in Manitoba to better service its expanding market area — one in Brandon and the other in Russell.
According to information on the B.C. government website, there are several targets for this new partnership including expanding local production through a farmer and rancher forum, reducing barriers to agricultural trade between neighbouring jurisdictions and increasing producers’ access to processing and retail markets and shared inspection services.
“This is the start of work to come. This will lead to two years of work between B.C. and the Yukon to create better support between our jurisdictions and working together to do so,” Ball said.
