Wheat and barley development commissions in Saskatchewan will be able to begin collecting checkoffs Aug. 1.

Agriculture minister Lyle Stewart said today that the checkoffs will be set at 52 cents per tonne for wheat and 50 cents a tonne for barley. This is expected to generate about $4.3 million for wheat and $1 million for barley.

Interim boards will be in place until elections can be held by December.

Stewart said the boards will allow producers to have more control over research, market development and promotion for their sectors.
