ATLANTA, Ga. – The South Korean ambassador to the United States expects his country will sign a free trade agreement with the U.S. within the next few months.

Han Duk-soo said the U.S. Congress is likely to pass an approval for the agreement soon after U.S. president Barack Obama submits it for ratification in the coming weeks.

Han told farmers attending the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual meeting in Atlanta this week that Obama and most major American industries, including automotive and agriculture, support the deal.

“I hope, my hope, is that this agreement will be finalized by the end of June at the latest,” he said.

Han said of all the U.S. sectors, agriculture has the most to gain from freer trade with Korea.

“I see no downsides to U.S. agriculture,” he said.
