KIEV (Reuters) — Ukraine maintained a high level of grain exports in March, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday, shipping abroad 1.7 million tonnes this month despite political turmoil.

The ministry said in a statement that exports had included 1.6 million tonnes of corn  and 108,500 tonnes of wheat so far.

Exports rose more than a third to 26 million tonnes season-on-season as of March 19 due to bigger shipments of wheat and corn, it said in a statement.

“The political situation is not affecting the export of grain,” agriculture minister Ihor Shvaika was quoted in the statement as saying.

Ukraine harvested its largest grain crop of 63 million tonnes in 2013 and the ministry has said exports could jump to 33 million tonnes in the 2013-14 season from 23 million last season.
