Saskatchewan teachers are planning a two-day strike May 25 and 26, after three days of bargaining did not result in an agreement.

The Saskatchewan Teachers Federation said May 20 buses, classes and extra-curricular activities would all be cancelled those two days.

Talks broke off May 19 after a one-day walkout earlier this month brought both sides back to the table. The teachers have been without a contract since August.

“We came back to the bargaining table with the assumption that the government was fully prepared to bring increased resources to the table,” said Gwen Dueck, spokesperson for the teachers’ bargaining committee.

The teachers first asked for 12 percent in one year. After a one-day walkout earlier this month, they revised their request to 16.3 percent over three years.

The government-trustee bargaining committee has offered 5.5 percent over three years.

Dueck said there was no flexibility.

“We heard that the government was prepared to provide teachers with an additional 0.55 percent increase from their offer,” she said.

Sandi Urban-Hall of the government-trustee committee said the teachers’ new demand indicates they were unwilling to negotiate.
