A proposed tire distribution facility that caused zoning friction between the City of Regina and the surrounding Rural Municipality of Sherwood will not be built in Saskatchewan.

Kal Tire said today it would expand its Edmonton warehouse instead of building a new facility near the Global Transportation Hub.

“Timing and concern over costs impacted our ability to start construction on this new distribution centre,” John Mullin, senior vice-president of purchasing and marketing. said in a statement.

“It has been determined that it is more cost-effective to expand an existing facility than to construct a new one.”

The company said a missed critical deadline meant the company wouldn’t be ready for the 2014 winter rush season.

Mullin said Kal Tire is still committed to Saskatchewan through its existing warehouse and retread plant in Regina, as well as stores around the province.
