Three of the six 2014 nominees to the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame were announced Nov. 13 at Canadian Western Agribition.
Gary Jones of Crane Valley, Elvin Haupstein (posthumous) of Weyburn and Dale Montgomery from Maple Creek will be honoured next August at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon.
Jones is a cattle rancher who served as president of both the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. He also served on the first board of Canadian Western Agribition.
Haupstein, who died in August, spent 50 years on various farm organizations and was particularly involved in the dairy industry. He was a strong supporter of research, including the Rayner research unit, which opened in August at the University of Saskatchewan. The family still operates a dairy east of Weyburn.

Low global prices for grains, Russia’s main agricultural commodity, have caused a sharp fall in exports in recent months.
Montgomery is one of the most well known stock dog handlers in Canada. In 1989, Agribition hired him to implement a stock dog competition at the show. His dog, Gyp, still holds the record of 47 second to move sheep through a course and into pens. The Montgomerys also raised sheep for the government to use to control noxious weeds.
The three other nominees will be named in January at Cropsphere in Saskatoon.
