Thin ice alert issued in Saskatchewan

The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority is reminding people to use extreme caution on water bodies, especially in eastern areas where high water levels and fast stream flows are causing thin ice.

Several horses and cattle drowned recently after falling through ice.

Last autumn’s excess water and water releases designed to alleviate spring flooding are causing the hazards.

Water bodies that are especially at risk include the Souris River, Moose Mountain Creek, the Qu’Appelle River system and the lakes downstream from Craven, Assiniboine River, Red Deer River, Whitesand River and their tributaries.

The authority continues to release water from Rafferty Reservoir, Alameda Reservoir, Good Spirit Lake, Last Mountain Lake and all lakes on the Qu’Appelle system: Echo, Pasqua, Mission, Katepwa, Crooked and Round lakes.
