Farmers in southern Saskatchewan who have already faced one of the wettest years in recent memory are now being warned of the potential for heavy rains and localized flooding this weekend.

Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency issued a warning today advising of the potential for significant rain over a large portion of southern Saskatchewan.

According to the WSA bulletin, areas forecasted to receive the heaviest rain are southeast of a line that runs from Val Marie, Sask., to Assiniboia, Regina and Estevan.

Rainfall in those areas could be in the range of 50 to 80 millimetres (two to three inches) with the majority of the precipitation expected between tonight and Monday morning.

Government to invest in biofuel production

The federal government will invest $370 million in a new biofuel production incentive.

Rainfall will be heaviest on Saturday and Sunday, WSA said.

The agency said it has “low to moderate confidence in the timing (of the rain), extent of the area affected, tracking of the system and precipitation amounts.”

Water releases from the Rafferty and Alameda reservoirs may be increased but are not expected to cause any flooding problems downstream.

Both reservoirs have a large amount of storage available.

According to WSA, many areas in the southern portion of the province still have above normal water levels caused by flooding in July.

Rainfall this weekend could create localized flooding in some areas.

Residents are asked to be aware of the situation and pay attention to the weather forecast and prepare accordingly.

WSA will be post updates at wsask.ca.
