Seeding has begun in Saskatchewan despite the wet, cool spring.

The provincial agriculture ministry said in its first crop report of the season May 8 that two percent of the crop is in the ground in the southwest.

Producers in the southeastern and west-central areas are just starting to seed, and most will be underway in the next week or two.

Precipitation continues to delay operations. Many parts of the province have received more than 100 millimetres in the last five weeks. Last week, rain and snow ranged from trace amounts to 39 mm in the southeast.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated 30 percent surplus, 67 percent adequate and three percent short, province-wide.

Hay and pasture topsoil moisture is rated 18 percent surplus, 79 percent adequate and three percent short.
