Seeding became more widespread in Saskatchewan this week as warm dry weather finally allowed farmers into their fields.

The provincial crop report said seven percent of the crop was in the ground as of Monday. That’s slightly behind the five-year average of nine percent.

Most progress was made in the southwest, where 20 percent was sown.

Farmers in the southeast had planted six percent, the west-central and northwest regions five percent, the east-central area two percent and the northeast less than one percent.

More normal weather later in the week should push those percentages much higher by next week’s report.

Topsoil moisture conditions continue to be good, with 79 percent of cropland moisture considered adequate and 20 percent surplus. On hay and pasture, the conditions are rates 83 percent adequate and 12 percent surplus.
