The Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission has a new chair.

Jason Skotheim of Prince Albert, Sask., was elected chair by SaskBarley’s board of directors following the commission’s 2016 annual general meeting in Saskatoon, Jan. 13.

Brent Johnson of Strasbourg, Sask., was elected vice-chair.

“I am honoured to have been elected as chair,” said Skotheim.

“This upcoming year will be filled with opportunities and challenges as we expand initiatives in research and market development. I look forward to working with producers, other commissions, industry and government to build a sustainable barley industry for Saskatchewan farmers.”

NFU says proposed plant breeders’ rights come at farmers’ expense

The National Farmers Union is pushing back against changes to the Plant Breeders’ Rights Act that would narrow the scope of farmers’ right to save seed or propagate crops from cuttings and tubers.

Skotheim and his brothers run a 4,500 acre farm north of Prince Albert, where they grow barley, wheat and canola.

Skotheim is also a founding owner of Horizon Manufacturing Inc., a dry pet food manufacturing company.

Johnson is a fourth generation farmer.

His family began farming in the Strasbourg area roughly 100 years ago. The farm grows grain on 5,000 acres and includes a 180 head commercial cow-calf operation.

Last month, the province’s barley producers elected three directors to the commission’s board.

Incumbents Zenneth Faye of West Bend, Sask., and Cam Goff of Hanley, Sask., were re-elected for their second terms on the board.

Newcomer Keith Rueve of Muenster, Sask., was also elected.
