MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Allen and Lillian Patkau of Hanley are Saskatchewan’s environmental stewardship award winners for 2013.
The couple received the award at the 100th annual Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association meeting this week in Moose Jaw.
“We are blessed to make our living off the land,” said Lillian Patkau, while Allen added that they were honoured “to be recognized that we actually walk the talk.”
The Patkaus have converted their land on Sandy Arrow Ranch west of Hanley to grass over the past 30 years. They have used the Environmental Farm Plan program and been federal pasture patrons.

Allen Patkau is a past chair of the Prairie Conservation Action Plan and is a member of the provincial agriculture minister’s advisory committee for the federal pasture transition.
The TESA award, as it is known, is presented annually by the SSGA, Ducks Unlimited and Meyers Norris Penny to a cattle producer who demonstrates environmental excellence.
The Patkaus have qualified for the national TESA, which will be presented by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association at its semi-annual meeting Aug. 13-15 in London, Ont.
