The Saskatchewan government has approved new regulations that will lead to a province-wide multi-material recycling program.
The Household Packaging and Paper Stewardship Program Regulations set the framework to fund the collection and recycling of paper, newsprint, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass.
By Aug. 6, industry, through Multi-Material Stewardship Western Inc., will present the minister of the environment with a plan on how the recycling program would be structured, funded and managed.
MMSW will work with municipalities and others to develop the program.
Ken Cheveldayoff, environment minister, said an estimated 40 percent of household waste going to landfills today could be diverted.
“That amount is equivalent to about 112,000 tonnes or 52,700 pick-up trucks,” he said in a news release.
The new framework shifts most of the responsibility for recycling programs from municipalities to industry.
