The Saskatchewan Party government plans to spend $30 million over 10 years to rehabilitate Lake Diefenbaker irrigation infrastructure.That commitment was among several made in today’s speech from the throne.The government said it will spend $1 million this year to repair the M1 Canal, which is the main irrigation waterway from the lake. It provides water for 55,000 irrigated acres, eight communities, three potash mines and 26 domestic users.Further details on the plan will be released during the spring budget.Other promises for the fourth and final session of this legislature before a November 2011 election include implementing the second phase of the reduction in education property tax, increasing wind power capacity, new measures to protect sensitive landscapes and beginning consultations this fall on proposed new provincial parks.Among the legislation to be introduced will be a bill increasing fines for people who mistreat farm animals.The government is also planning to expand emergency medical services in co-operation with Alberta’s Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service program.The speech didn’t set out specific road work targets for the coming year, but it said the highways ministry tendered work on 1,129 kilometres this year. Another 793 km of maintenance and safety improvements were also completed.
