Sask. short lines to receive $900,000 for projects this year

Saskatchewan’s short-line railway sustainability program will pay $900,000 in grants to 13 short lines this year, up $200,000 from last year.

The province announced the allocations for the 50-50 cost-shared infrastructure maintenance program today.

Short lines that meet eligibility requirements can use the money to maintain or upgrade rail lines by replacing ties, repairing bridges or stabilizing track. The 13 companies operate 2,000 kilometres of track.

The allocations are as follows:

Southern Rails Co-operative, Avonlea, $35,000

Carlton Trail Railway, Prince Albert, $78,241

Red Coat Road & Rail, Viceroy, $48,900

Great Western Railway, Shaunavon, $210,909

Thunder Rail, Arborfield, $35,000

Wheatland Rail, Cudworth, $35,000

Fife Lake Railway, Coronach, $41,246

Rotch River Rail, Choiceland, $35,000

Great Sandhills Railway, Leader, $80,367

Last Mountain Railway, Regina, $57,830

Stewart Southern Railway, Fillmore, $56,129

Big Sky Rail, Regina, $151,378

Long Creek Railroad, Tribune, $35,000.

This is the first time Big Sky Rail is eligible to receive funding.
