Saskatchewan Agriculture says 23 percent of the crop has been seeded as of May 19.

The five year average is 44 percent.

Most of the progress over the last week was in the west. Producers in eastern regions are just beginning to get into their fields.

Seeding is furthest along in the northwest, where it is 41 percent complete, while the southeast is only eight percent complete.

The ministry said 46 percent of field peas, 35 percent of lentils, 28 percent of durum, 22 percent of spring wheat and 20 percent of the canola farmers intended to plant are in the ground.

Cropland topsoil moisture is drying out. Thirty-six percent is now rated surplus, 62 percent adequate and two percent dry.

Hay and pasture topsoil moisture is rated 30 percent surplus, 65 percent adequate and five percent short.
