The Saskatchewan government has donated $200,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Society and thanked the agency for its work during last summer’s floods.

More than 160 Red Cross volunteers donated 5,000 hours to help those affected.

Yogi Huyghebaert, minister of corrections, public safety and policing, said the Red Cross assisted where the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program was unable.

“They provided things that we legally can’t within the framework of the PDAP,” he told reporters.

For example, a resident in Maple Creek lost his home and was offered a friend’s cabin, but it needed roof repairs. The Red Cross was able to provide money to help with the repairs when the PDAP couldn’t.

It also provided $2,500 worth of teddy bears to affected children.

Huyghebaert said the government has sent money to help people in Haiti and Pakistan and it is also essential to provide help at home.
