The Saskatchewan government and Fertilizer Canada today signed an agreement to work together on the implementation and adoption of fertilizer application practices.
Many farmers have already adopted the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Program, which focuses on the right source at the right rate at the right time and in the right place, said Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart.
“This agreement will further that work, contributing to greater on-farm sustainability and environmental stewardship in Saskatchewan,” he said.
The partnership will include awareness programs, demonstration farms and training materials.
Fertilizer Canada CEO Garth Whyte said the government’s commitment will contribute to sustainable farming efforts.
The organization, which represents manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers of nitrogen, phosphate, potash and sulfur, works in provinces to help farmers with their fertilizer management.
Five other provincial agreements and 39 demonstration farms have been established already, representing 2.1 million acres.
Saskatchewan has more than 35 million acres of cropland, Whyte noted.
