Flood water submerged the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway today at Wolseley, Sask., about 100 kilometres east of Regina.

The highways ministry closed the road and diverted traffic north to Melville and back down Highway 10 to Regina.

The RCMP was also warning motorists away from the eastbound lanes at Grenfell, another 20 kilometres east from Wolseley.

Highways officials said water was flowing over the major east-west route in four places. The others were at Broadview and Indian Head.

Several other highways in the province were closed or had flag persons in attendance to warn drivers.

“Right now we have in the order of 34 sections of highway where there is water on the road,” said spokesperson Doug Wakabayashi.

Closed roads include Highway 55 east of Carrot River, where the bridge is flooded, the Wakaw Lake access road off Highway 2, Highway 31 between Herschel and Grid 656, which is washed out, Highway 25 between Highways 2 and 3, and Highway 18 near Carnduff, where the bridge is out.

The highway hotline has resumed 24-hour operation to update drivers on road conditions due to flooding.
