Alberta Crop Report: Rains in the south, dryness in the north
Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.
On the east side, farmers in the north and south are both about 85 percent done, while the central region is 83 percent complete.
Average to above-average yields continue to be reported throughout the province. Spring wheat average yields are 47 bushels per acre and canola is averaging 38 bu. per acre. Other crop average yields in bu. per acre are durum 44, barley 69 and peas 43.
Quality is also strong. Spring wheat grades are estimated at 59 percent No. 1, 31 percent No. 2, nine percent No. 3 and just one percent at feed quality.
Crop damage in the past week was the result of wind and rain. The northwest saw the most rain at about 36 millimetres. Some cereal crops are bleaching and sprouting due to rain, while wind shattered some swathed canola and ripe crops.
