Saskatchewan farmer Levi Wood is the new president of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association.

Wood, a fifth generation wheat farmer from Pense, Sask., replaces outgoing president Kevin Bender, who announced his retirement at the WCWGA annual convention in Edmonton in January.

Bender, an Alberta grain grower who served as the organization’s president since January 2009, will continue to serve as a WCWGA director.

Wood has a commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of British Columbia.

Before returning to farming in 2007, Wood worked as a foreign exchange trader. He also represented the WCWGA  on a trade mission to Japan and China in the fall of 2012.

“It’s a great time to be a young farmer in Western Canada,” he said in a news release announcing his presidency.

“I look forward to leading the wheat growers and working with others to help build an even brighter future for prairie grain farmers.”
