Saskatchewan agriculture minister Bob Bjornerud will announce assistance for livestock producers affected by flooding during a speech to rural municipal delegates in Saskatoon Nov. 9.Under questioning Nov. 8 from opposition leader and agriculture critic Dwain Lingenfelter, the minister told him to stay tuned for an announcement in the next few days.He later confirmed for reporters that opportunity would be at the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities mid-term convention. However, he wouldn’t say what form the assistance would take. Several organizations have called for per head payments, acreage payments to restore grass and transport assistance for feed.”I would say this,” he said. “Don’t get your hopes up for an acreage payment.”Bjornerud said the feed supply in the province is probably greater than it has been for 10 years, but it’s not all in the right place. In the past there have been feed freight assistance programs. He said the province has been working with Ottawa to see if the federal government can participate.Lingenfelter said the requests from farm organizations have been reasonable and he agreed that transportation assistance for feed would be helpful. He said producers wouldn’t have to downsize their herds to make it through the winter if governments step up.
