The Saskatchewan government has contracted Informa Economics to review the proposed takeover of Viterra.

Premier Brad Wall said today that the analysis, due May 7, will be made public and will help the government determine its position on the takeover by Glencore.

Although the provincial government has no formal standing in the reviews the federal government will undertake, it can make a case for or against the deal.

The terms of the analysis include identifying risks to and opportunities and benefits from the acquisition, including grain industry employment, competition in both grain handling and farm inputs, farmers, government revenue, the province’s strategic position in the grain industry and its reputation as a place to invest.

The report will identify options to mitigate any risks or act on any opportunities.

The report will cost $125,000.
