In addition to the huge unseeded area in the Canadian eastern Prairies, North Dakota is expected to see millions of acres with no crop.

As much as a quarter of the state’s normal acreage, 6.3 million acres, will not be seeded, Aaron Krauter, executive director of the USDA’s Farm Service Agency in the state, told local reporters on Tuesday.

Also, a large number of acres that had been seeded will likely be drowned out after recent heavy rains.

The previous worst year for unseeded area was 1999 when saturated soils affected 3.9 million acres.

The state is the largest producer of spring wheat, durum and canola in the United States.
