The Saskatchewan government has no intention of buying the CWB’s assets or acquiring a stake in the prairie grain handling industry.
The province is aware of a National Farmers Union proposal that encourages Saskatchewan and other western provinces to become “actively engaged” in the federal government’s plan to privatize the CWB.
But deputy agriculture minister Alanna Koch said the province will not be supporting the NFU plan.
“The Saskatchewan government is not considering purchasing the assets of the CWB,” Koch told the Western Producer Dec. 5.
“We’re not in the business of running a grain company and we feel that it’s best left to those who do run grain companies.”
“What we want is a competitive environment for farmers to do business in, so having a variety of options as to what grain company you want to do business with is the best way for producers to have increased returns over the long term,” she continued.
“We certainly won’t be looking further into this proposal that the NFU has put forward.”
