Prices strong at Agribition bison sale

A yearling bull from Bison Spirit Ranch at Oak Lake, Man., topped the 21st Canadian National bison sale held at Canadian Western Agribition.

The bull, consigned by Trevor and Jodie Gompf, sold for $8,250 during today’s sale.

The Gompfs had a successful day, showing the grand champion male, a two-year-old bull, which sold for $5,000 to open the sale.

The reserve, consigned by Silver Creek Bison of Binscarth, Man., sold for $5,500.

The top selling female was the grand champion, a two-year-old Silver Creek bred heifer, which sold for $7,000 to the Gompfs.

Silver Creek also had the reserve female, a yearling heifer that sold for $4,000.

Canadian Bison Association president Mark Silzer said prices for the good stock on offer were strong, but he thought bull prices could be a little stronger.

The two-year-old bulls averaged $2,913, or $2.52 per pound. Yearling bulls averaged $2,150 or $3.50per lb. ,and bull calves averaged $1,194 for $2.50 per lb.

The two-year-old heifers averaged $4,086 for $3.72 per lb. Yearling heifers averaged $1,543 and $2.44 per lb.

Pens of two yearling heifers sold for an average $1,450 or $2.34 per lb. while pens of heifer calves sold for an average of $1,083 or $2.54 per lb.
