Prairies lead country in population growth

The population of Canada’s prairie provinces continues to grow at a faster pace than any other region in the country, according to Statistics Canada data.

Population growth during the fourth quarter of 2012 was above the national average in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

During the last three months of 2012, the population in Manitoba and Saskatchewan grew by 0.3 percent.

Alberta had the country’s highest fourth quarter growth rate at 0.6 percent.

Saskatchewan’s population as of Jan. 1, 2013, was estimated at 1.089 million, the province’s highest population ever.

Manitoba’s population was estimated at 1.274 million and Alberta’s was estimated at 3.931 million.

In terms of annual population growth, Alberta and Saskatchewan led the nation with annual growth rates of three percent and two percent, respectively.
