Well-known crop breeder Brian Rossnagel is among eight people who will receive the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in a ceremony next month.

Now a professor emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan, Rossnagel is an expert in oat and barley genetics who developed more than 90 new cultivars during his years as a plant breeder.

The order of merit is the province’s highest award, recognizing those who contributed significantly to the province and its residents.

Brett Wilson, an entrepreneur and philanthropist now living in Calgary, will also be invested in the Nov. 27 ceremony in Saskatoon, as will Raymond Ahenakew, a leader from Ahtahkakoop First Nation; Bruce Beatty, posthumous, graphic artist; author and teacher Sandra Birdsell from Regina; educator Barbara Young from Regina; Saskatoon lawyer Thomas Molloy and Regina artist David Thauberger.
