Outlook area feedlot plan on hold

An application to develop a feedlot in the Outlook, Sask., area is on hold after concerned citizens presented the rural municipal council with a petition to stop it.The Rural Municipality of Rudy council expected to vote on the proposal from Namaka Farms of Strathmore, Alta., at a special meeting Oct. 21. However, the petition with 66 names was served just hours before the meeting was to start.It calls for a referendum on the project.Namaka Farms has proposed a 6,000-head feedlot that could be expanded to 36,000 animals.RM administrator Trent Michelman has 30 days to determine if the petition is valid. Fifteen percent of RM taxpayers must sign a petition in order to hold a referendum.According to 2006 census statistics, the RM’s population is 434.Concerns about the project centre on its proximity to the South Saskatchewan River and irrigation works.
