The Saskatchewan NDP is calling for a $100 per acre payment from the federal and provincial governments to help farmers who can’t seed.Leader Dwain Lingenfelter toured northeastern Saskatchewan earlier this week and said farm families are facing a financial disaster. As many as five million acres could go unseeded this year, he added.”Farm families have already invested heavily in the millions of acres that will go unseeded this spring, as well as acres that have been seeded and are now under water.”Provincial agriculture minister Bob Bjornerud also toured part of the area June 7 and plans another tour June 14.Excess moisture in the northeast and east-central areas has put seeding operations far behind. More than 30 rural municipalities have declared agricultural disasters.
