A new humane society will take over rural animal protection services in Saskatchewan April 1.

A two-year funding agreement was announced March 26 between the provincial agriculture ministry and the non-profit Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan.

The ministry will provide $610,000 a year for the new corporation to enforce the Animal Protection Act after the Saskatchewan SPCA announced earlier this year it would no longer do so after its contract expired March 31.

Former SPCA staff members, including manager Kaley Pugh, formed the new organization, which will be based in Saskatoon. Its board includes members of provincial veterinary and livestock organizations.

Beginning April 1, the toll-free number to report possible animal abuse is 844-382-0002 and the email is info@animalprotectionservices.ca.

Pugh said she anticipated a smooth transition from the SPCA to the new agency.
