Federal NDP leader Jack Layton says enough of his MPs will side with him on the long gun registry next week that the registry will be saved.Speaking to reporters in Regina, where the NDP caucus is meeting today and tomorrow, Layton said rural MPs are supporting his approach to the controversial bill.He had asked his MPs to consult with constituents and report back at the Regina meetings.”I am very confident that the votes that are needed to continue the registry so that it can be fixed will indeed be there,” he said after those discussions.MPs will vote next Wednesday on a recommendation by a House of Commons committee to scrap Conservative MP Candice Hoeppner’s private member’s bill to repeal the long gun registry. The Liberal and Bloc Quebecois MPs are expected to support the recommendation, while Conservatives are likely to vote against it. That leaves the NDP vote to decide the outcome.
