Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose has named Saskatchewan MP David Anderson agriculture critic after shuffling her shadow cabinet last week.

Anderson, 59, represents Cypress Hills-Grasslands and replaces Chris Warkentin, who is now deputy House leader and question period co-ordinator.

Anderson was a long-time critic of the Canadian Wheat Board’s export monopoly and served as parliamentary secretary to the minister on the CWB when the Conservatives were in office.

He farmed in the Frontier area, where he was raised, and was first elected in 2000 as a Canadian Alliance MP.

Conservatives call for approval of emergency strychnine use

The federal Conservatives called for the government to authorize emergency use of the poison strychnine against infestations of gophers.

“I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to hold this Liberal government and the minister to account on issues facing farmers in Cypress Hills-Grasslands and across the country,” Anderson said in a statement. “Stakeholders have been very disappointed that this government has already failed them. This has been highlighted by the Liberals’ inability to address international trade issues that are so critical to our producers’ success.”

Anderson will also continue as critic for international human rights and religious freedom. He has a masters of divinity from the Canadian Theological Seminary.
