Canada’s hog industry has received $13 million from the federal government for research on changing consumer demands while improving disease resilience and animal welfare practices.
The money is on top of the previous $9.5 million swine cluster funding made under the Agri-Innovation program from 2010-13.
Swine Innovation Porc will lead the new cluster and help scientists and academics improve the nutritional value of pork products, which will increase market share and long-term industry growth.
Agriculture Canada researchers will also focus on trials that help lower production and feed input costs.
Investment of $4.3 million from industry partners will further support the research cluster.
