About 2,000 pigs died in a hog barn fire northeast of Taber, Alta., March 31. An investigation of the cause is underway.
Outlook Pork Ltd. lost several barns in the blaze, but employees were able to save about 1,000 sows and piglets.
Taber RCMP reported that employees noticed smoke coming from one of the barns’ entrances on the evening of March 31 and called the Taber fire department. It responded and battled the fire for about 10 hours, according to other media reports. Police do not consider the fire’s cause to be suspicious.
Outlook Pork is owned by Peter Klok, who also has hog operations near Nobleford, Alta.
Klok spent today finding places to keep the hogs remaining on the affected farm.
An estimate on the financial loss was unavailable.
