The Saskatchewan government plans to improve and repair 1,400 kilometres of road this year, as long as the weather co-operates.

“We want to get started on this heavy schedule soon, but weather conditions will have an impact on timing,” said highways minister Jim Reiter.

Eighty-six percent of the planned projects were completed last year under the trying conditions of excess moisture and storms.

Major projects this year include continuing work on twinning Highway 11 between Saskatoon and Prince Albert. It is to be completed in 2012.

A new interchange at the Trans-Canada Highway and Lewvan Drive in Regina will be completed, along with other work necessary for access to the Global Transportation Hub near Regina.

In rural areas, 160 km will be upgraded.

Major repaving projects will occur on 17 highways, while 25 bridges or culverts will be replaced or repaired. The largest bridge project is the replacement of the bride on Highway 2 at St. Louis. The current structure is 96 years old.
