Groups that participated in the annual highway cleanup in May collectively earned $853,650 for their efforts.

The Alberta government reported June 1 that 7,136 people from 566 clubs and non-profit groups participated in the cleanup.

They filled 55,641 garbage bags with trash from more than 9,700 kilometres of roadside ditches. More garbage was collected this year than last, although participation numbers were similar, according to a government news release.

Rain and snow delayed the cleanup in some parts of the province so the event took place over two weekends, on May 5 and May 12.

Participant groups in the cleanup earn $100 per km for highway ditches within 16 km of cities and for highway ditches cleaned on both sides within areas designated by the transportation department.
