Former Sask. speaker dies

Former speaker of the Saskatchewan legislature Herb Swan has died.

The farmer and seed grower from Beechy, Sask., was 86.

He started in politics as a local school board trustee and was president of what was then known as the Saskatchewan School Trustees’ Association from 1976 to 1978.

He was first elected to represent Rosetown-Elrose for the Progressive Conservatives in 1978, and served as speaker from 1982 to 1986. After the 1986 election, he was minister of environment until 1987 and then added public safety to his duties until 1989. He retired from politics in 1991.

Swan is survived by his wife Anita, four children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral was scheduled for today in Beechy.
