Flags at the Saskatchewan legislature have been lowered to honour long-time politician and former Liberal leader Davey Steuart, who died Nov. 5 in Kelowna, B.C.

He was 94.

Steuart, who served as an air force navigator during the Second World War, was an alderman and then mayor of Prince Albert during the 1950s. He entered provincial politics by winning a 1962 byelection in Prince Albert-Duck Lake. He was re-elected in 1964, 1967, 1971 and 1975.

He served in several cabinet positions in the Ross Thatcher Liberal government, including public health, natural resources, minister in charge of SaskPower and treasurer, as the finance portfolio was then called. He was also the minister in charge of the Saskatchewan Timber Board.

Steuart took over as Liberal leader after Thatcher’s sudden death and served as leader of the opposition from 1971 to 1975.

He was appointed to the Senate in 1976 and served until his retirement in 1991.

Funeral services are planned for Nov. 10 in Kelowna.
