Former farm journalist dies

Long-time agricultural journalist and author Donald Baron died Nov. 13 in Regina General Hospital.

Baron was raised in Ottawa and graduated from Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph in 1949.

He worked for the Farmer’s Magazine in Toronto before joining Country Guide in 1952 and working in several provinces. He became editor 10 years later.

In 1975, Baron joined CBC television as head of agriculture and resources.

Four years later he became executive director of the Palliser Wheat Growers Association in Regina.

Baron went on to become a speechwriter for premier Grant Devine and later wrote four books, including Canada’s Great Grain Robbery, about grain politics, and Jailhouse Justice, about farmers trying to market their grain outside the Canadian Wheat Board.

During his time as a reporter, he served as president of the Canadian Farm Writers Federation as well as several of the provincial affiliates.

Baron was predeceased by his wife, Irene, in 2005. He is survived by his son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.

The funeral is planned for Nov. 20 in Regina.
