The former general manager of the Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan has thrown his hat into the political ring.

Nial Kuyek announced today that he will seek the NDP nomination in the federal riding of Regina Qu’Appelle. Currently, House of Commons speaker Andrew Scheer represents the area.

Kuyek is well known in agricultural circles. Aside from his time at APAS, he also worked for the provincial agriculture department, the former Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and the Saskatchewan Bison Association.

In a news release, Kuyek said he decided to run because of the poor performance of Stephen Harper’s government.

“Here, the Harper government has cut a swath of destruction through rural Saskatchewan,” he said.

“Farm income safety nets have been gutted, the Canadian Wheat Board is gone, the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration is gone, community pastures are up for grabs and the future of the Indian Head Tree Nursery is in disarray. Our clogged grain transportation network is just the latest example.”

Kuyek grew up in the riding and still has an interest in the family farm near Bankend, Sask.
