FNA Fertilizer Limited Partnership has selected a site for its proposed $1.7 billion nitrogen fertilizer plant.

The facility will be built in Belle Plaine, Sask., although no construction dates have been set.

The plant would produce 1.2 million tonnes of urea and 425,000 tonnes of UAN liquid fertilizer annually.

“This announcement is an important step in project development and demonstrates a distinctly tangible milestone,” Bob Friesen, FNA FLP spokesperson said in a press release.

Belle Plaine was selected because of its access to natural gas, ample electrical and water supply, logistical infrastructure and access to skilled workers.

“The types of industries that are already located in the Regina-Moose Jaw corridor make it a logical place to locate,” said Friesen.

The project would create an estimated 1,900 construction jobs and 170 positions at the plant once it is operating.

Construction dates will be announced once the equity has been raised and other project milestones accomplished.
