Saskatchewan residents are urged to get their flu shots after 161 confirmed cases and three deaths.

All three deaths occurred in people with underlying medical conditions and included two children under age five, said the province’s deputy chief medical health officer, Denise Werker.

Most of the confirmed cases are of pandemic H1N1, which is included in the seasonal flu vaccine and is the predominant strain circulating in Canada this year.

Children under five, as well as young and middle-aged people, are most at risk from that strain.

Saskatchewan’s flu numbers are quite a bit lower than Alberta’s, but Werker said that is because the provinces track cases differently.

In addition to getting the influenza vaccine, Werker said anyone experiencing shortness of breath should seek medical attention.
