First farmer-elected CWB chair dies

The first farmer-elected chair of the Canadian Wheat Board has died.

Ken Ritter had cancer and died Oct. 23.

The current chair of the CWB board of directors, Allen Oberg, issued a statement of condolence.

“I was saddened to hear of Ken’s untimely death and extend my sympathies and the thoughts and well wishes of all CWB board members to Ken’s family and closest friends,” Oberg said.

Ritter was elected in District 4 in the first CWB director elections and was elected chair in June 1999. He served until March 2008 when his term expired.

He farmed in the Major-Superb area of west central Saskatchewan. He had also practiced law and taught school in Canada and Australia.
